DTF Transfer Placement Guide

Great artwork can still look wrong when placement is off. Use this guide to position DTF transfers consistently on tees, hoodies, sweatshirts, bags, and other garments before pressing.

These are reliable starting points—not rules that replace checking the actual garment. Garment cut, youth sizing, design shape, and brand fit all change the final placement.

Center-chest placement

For a standard front print, fold the shirt vertically to find the center line. Place the top of the design roughly 2.5 to 3 inches below the collar on adult tees, then adjust based on the artwork height and garment neckline.

  • Adult T-shirt: usually 2.5–3 in below collar
  • Hoodie or crewneck: usually 3–4 in below collar
  • Youth shirts: usually 1.5–2.5 in below collar

Left-chest placement

For a left-chest logo, use the center line of the left side of the garment—not the seam. A common starting point is 7–9 inches down from the left shoulder seam and 3–4 inches over from the center line on adult garments.

Most left-chest logos print between 3 and 4 inches wide. Use the DTF Transfer Size Chart to choose your art size before you build the sheet.

Full-back placement

Center the design on the back and place it about 3–4 inches below the collar on adult garments. Big back art needs enough distance from the collar to sit cleanly, but not so low that it drifts toward the waist.

Sleeves, bags, and special garments

Sleeve prints should be centered in the printable sleeve area and checked flat before pressing. For bags, hats, pockets, or seams, always test your exact substrate first. Heat, pressure, fabric thickness, and obstructions can change the result.

Pressing basics

Start with a pre-press to remove moisture and wrinkles. For standard garments, use 300°F for 15 seconds with medium-firm pressure. Let the transfer cool completely before the cold peel, then cover and repress for 5 seconds.

Before you press

  • Use a ruler, shirt alignment tool, or folded center line.
  • Check the design is level from several feet away.
  • Protect zippers, seams, buttons, and thick pockets from uneven pressure.
  • Test a new garment style before running a full order.
